I was at a training session last Thursday with an attorney from Minneapolis. During this session we talked about the application process, interviews, checking with references, etc. At the conclusion of this topic she stated "By law, you need to keep all of these materials for one year". This includes all applications for the position, interview notes, background checks received, references checks, all of it. I know here at the library, I have kept everything from any of the interviews we have done. Now I know I have to keep them for one year, and then can dispose of. This workshop was a wealth of information. It was one every employer should have been to. Unfortunately, it was sponsored by the system libraries for libraries only. Good topic to have.
