By: Dan Meyer The office hours for the Lac qui Parle County Veterans Service Office are 8:00 am - 4:30 pm Monday through Friday. My office phone number is (320) 598-3445.

FLASH NEWS! VA Extends "Agent Orange" Benefits to More Veterans!

VA has decided to establish a service-connection for Vietnam veterans with three specific illinesses based on the latest evidence of an assoication with the herbicides referred to as Agent Orange.

The illnesses affected by the recent decision are B cell leukemias, such as hairy cell leukemia; Parkinson's disease; and ischemic heart disease. If you are a Vietnam veteran (either "Boots-in-Country" and/or "Brown Water") and have been diagnosed with one of these illnesses contact our office immediately.

Attention family members and loved ones of deceased veterans!

In other news. What is a PMC?

A Presidential Memorial Certificate (PMC) is an engraved paper certificate, signed by the current President, to honor the memory of honorably discharged deceased veterans. The program was initiated in March 1962 by President John F. Kennedy. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) administers the PMC program by preparing the certificates which bear the current President's signature expressing the country's grateful recognition of the veteran's service to the United States of America. Eligible recipients include the next of kin and loved ones of honorably discharged deceased veterans.

In addition, Andrea and I have a "Book of Honor" to display the PMCs. Because more than one PMC can be provided, I would greatly appreciate the veteran's family or loved ones request one extra original certificate for this special project. The front and back covers, and side panel are constructed of wood. The Book's cover has been adorned with a painted patriotic themes. Lastly, the wood was polished and sealed.

The "Book of Honor" is on permanent display in the Courthouse just outside the office of the Lac qui Parle County Veterans Service Officer. This is one way our County can pay tribute to those deceased veterans who have bravely served in our Armed Forces. If you would like to apply for a PMC on behalf of a deceased veteran, visit Andrea or myself in our office.

Until next week, take care and "Fair winds and following seas!"
