| Welcome Meowmix; I like to give food as gifts, homegrown chicken, a package of porkchops, a pie with homegrown apples with a crust made with homegrown lard, or a homemade chicken pot pie for someone who does not care to cook, jars of jelly i made, a dozen eggs with a ribbon around the carton. Homemade soup in a jar to freeze or eat right away. Home made crackers are really good. Herbs from the garden are nice too. For cooking, crafts or teas. Hollyhock seeds or other seeds from your garden. I also make bath salts and other concoctions with essential oils, i would be glad to share formulas if there is interest. I made soap this year and made it extra fatty so it won't dry out winter skin. I like to sew and knit and crochet, but only when i am really in the mood. I did find a thing on Youtube about making a shower rug out of old towels or t shirts. it isn't hard at all and uses up old things in your home. I also order all my dairy products by the case, organic butter, cheese and ice cream. While not strictly local, it supports the dairy my friends have. Some people are really pleased with a basket of practical goodies. My son raids his bookshelf and gives people books especially for them, he writes things on the flyleaf that are funny or tender and it makes the gift really personal. Our family actually prefers used books, but we are weird or as one of my daughters put it "a bunch of nerds", she sees herself as the biggest nerd of all, lol. | |

| If you are comfortable enough with your computer, a few years ago, instead of sending food items, I made a family cookbook with all of the family favorites listed. I was able to add great graphics and photos of the family preparing some of the meals during get togethers. It was personable and only cost about $30 for the ink to print and the paper. It covered 10 names on the gift list though. Just an idea. Good Luck. | |

| Thanks, Angela, your idea sounds GREAT! I love it, and will consider it next year, as I don't think I could pull it off by Christmas this year... Best of wishes to you on your election - if I were an Ortonville resident, I surely would be voting for you, as I think you are just what Ortonville needs - a new resident, with new ideas, uneffected by the past politics. Thanks again! | |

| Thanks for the ideas, Joelie! I would like to be on your recipient list! It sounds like you have a lot of resources from your homestead - lucky you! I don't think I have any of the resources or talents that you have, but many others reading this might... I am sure your family members are very happy to get your gifts! Thanks for the ideas! | |

| MeowMix, I love your avatar. One of the things I have been thinking of doing this year is to take the letters that my Grandmother wrote to me and scan them into the computer. For many years my grandmother and I wrote letters to each other every month. I can then either print them into a book or the cheaper way will be to put them on a disc. It will make a nice Christmas gift for my family. Two of the most successful gifts I have done in the past was to take the old home videos to a photo shop and they transfered them to VHS. I made copies for all my family. Actually the VHS is over ten years old now and perhaps I could change the VHS to DVD now. My best surprise was to take an enormous box filled with old photos out of my mothers house without her seeing it. Over the next 8 months I sorted all her photos that she had been collecting for 30 years and put them in photo albums. For Christmas I wrapped up the filled photo albums and when mother opened it she jokingly said "Oh, look photo albums. Now I can get busy and put all my photos in them." When she opened what she thought would be an empty album and saw all the photos she was so surprised and grateful. | |

| MeowMix, Thank you for your kind words and support. I am looking forward to seeing where this road takes myself, my family, and the entire community (to me that includes surrounding areas as well). Good luck with your Christmas season. | |

| I'm into 'jar' recipes. From soup mixes to muffins, etc. There are a lot of websites out there with lots of good recipes. If people are interested, I will post some of my favorite sites. Other suggestions include making 'coupons' for things you would do for others -- such as a car wash, taking someone shopping, hours of babysitting, making supper for someone, etc. One year I made address labels for friends/family members. You can usually use your word program, or go into Microsoft templates. I changed out the pictures to make them seasonal. You can also use the same idea and make personalized items - stationary, stickers, etc. Just a few thoughts. Any thought to 're-gifting'?? nascargirl | |

| Thanks LadyHawk - I like the idea of doing something with photos...I just may do something like that.
Thanks also to nascargirl - I would be interested in seeing some of your favorite sites- especially for making soup mixes - that is something everyone could use and appreciate. | |

| When referring to photo gift ideas, I was selected by Kodak to host a photo gift party and it will be on Nov 14th, at 1p.m., if you have any interest, just let me know. It is fun to see all the inexpensive things you can do with photos. | |
