Bringing Money Back To Earth, an interview with financier Woody Tesch should be required reading for all economic development people. It is in the November 2009 Issue of Acres/USA magazine.

Interesting meeting last night about local food as economic recovery in Clinton, MN. There were 40-50 people there, some from our side of the lake.
It is exciting to be in on what might well become a catalyst for economic recovery in rural areas.
Ken Meter, who has done studies in 45 regions, 20 states and one province, spoke briefly. I have heard him speak before, in the past he has indicated in his studies that while cafos provide a brief bump in a local economy, it does not last.
Health, Wealth, Connection, Capacity. Those are what is needed for a rural community to work well. His study about Big Stone County shows that the county grows 76 million in commodities that costs 79 million to grow. Subsidies make it possible to keep operating in this way. One out of three families in the area live below the poverty level. Much of the farm expenditures occur outside the county. Thirteen million is spent on food, twelve million is spent outside the county. In the U.S. 50% of people qualify for help while we pride ourselves on "feeding the world". What can we do to turn this around?
We focused on availability of local food, including meat processing plants, people who sell honey, eggs, meat, dairy and produce locally.
What can be done to expand the local products sales? Education, what to do with the food. A commercial kitchen to process food for those who do not care to spend time in the kitchen. Protection for the local producer from unreasonable regulations better suited to large companies where producer and consumer never meet.
Schools, hospitals, nursing homes etc. using more local food. Warehouse space for producers to store food properly because of our shorter growing season.
Health and connection was on display last night. If capacity can be achieved can wealth for a local economy be far behind?
