From Jim Hasslen, Emergency Manager Big Stone County:

At this juncture they are predicting that the lake will crest on Sunday at 974 feet (project datum), plus or minus 6 inches. The 1997 flood was at 975.4 feet so if their prediction is correct it will be significant flooding. We are asking that volunteers come up to the City Garage in Ortonville, MN to register and then we will be assigning people work to do. We have about 50,000 sandbags to fill along with 15,000 that have already been filled and given to us from Wilken County (Breckenridge.) We will be assisting people on both sides of the lake (Big Stone City and surrounding area and Big Stone County).

If people are able to start sandbagging their home on their own they can contact Big Stone County Emergency Management to get filled sandbags. If people are need help with sandbagging their home, they can also contact Big Stone County Emergency Management and be put on a list for crews to come and help sandbag their home. The number people can call is: 320-839-6374 and it will be manned between 8am and 6pm until the event comes to an end.
