The office hours for the Big Stone County Veterans Service Office are 7:30 am – 4:00 pm Monday through Friday. My office phone number is (320) 839-6398.

Flash News! I’ll be having an Outreach VA Benefits Booth on Tuesday, December 15, at Bill’s Supervalue Plus located on 1st Street, right here in Ortonville. The outreach hours are from 12:00 noon until 5:00 that evening. Please stop by and say hello.

As a friendly reminder……. Any group or individual that would like to have/sponsor a VA Benefit’s Booth at their place of business or institution, let me know and we’ll schedule a place, date, and time.

Attention recently discharged combat veterans.

The National Defense Authorization Act (NDDA) of Fiscal Year 2008 (Public Law 110-181), was signed into law January 28, 2008. It extended the period of enhanced enrollment and health care benefits provided a veteran who served in a theater of combat operations after November 11, 1998.

These combat veterans are eligible for enrollment in Priority Group 6, unless eligible for a higher Priority Group, and are not charged copays for medications and/or treatment of conditions that are potentially related to their combat service. Veterans who enroll with VA under this enhanced authority will continue to be enrolled even after their enhanced eligibility period ends, although they may be shifted to Priority Group 7 or 8, depending on their income level, and requirement to make applicable copays.

New enrollees discharged from active duty on or after January 28, 2008, are eligible for this enhanced enrollment health benefit for five years after the date of their most recent discharge from active duty.

Combat veterans who have not yet enrolled and were discharged from active duty between November 11, 1998, and January 27,2003, may apply for this enhanced enrollment opportunity through January 27, 2011.

In other news. Which veterans are not required to make copays?

Many veterans qualify for cost-free health care and/or medications based on: receiving a Purple Heart Medal; or former Prisoner of War (POW) status; or compensable VA service-connected disabilities; or low income veterans; or other qualifying factors, including treatment related to their military service experience.

Until next week, take care and “Fair Winds and Following Seas!”
