Novice debate teams from Aberdeen Central, Brookings, and Watertown joined teams from Milbank in competing at the Justin Maass Memorial Novice Policy Debate tournament held in Milbank on December 11th at MHS.
A Milbank quartet finished in the first place position with a record of 6-0. On the affirmative side were Audrey Souza and Sierra Baumgart while Rebecca Schrupp and Tori Hopkins were on the negative side.
A team from Brookings captured second place with a 5-1 record and high speaker points while another Milbank group took 3rd place, also with a 5-1 record with 7 fewer speaker points than the Brookings squad. Affirming on that team were Bailey Slaby and Bailey Neidert (2-1) while Katie Loutsch and Jessica Dornbusch were negative and finished 3-0.
Dezmond Ward and Rachel Johannsen finished with a 2-1 record. Brandi Neidert debated 'maverick' (alone) when her partner got sick on the negative side.
One of Justin's teammates, Mallory Malm, was present to tell the group of competitors about Justin and to help give the awards.
