PostSubject: Prejudicial Transfer.....Favors or Favoritism...   Sun Dec 27, 2009 6:51 am

Friendship is a wonderful thing. Family is a wonderful thing. These bonds make us feel loved and accepted. They can also make us feel important and respected. There is nothing wrong with those feelings. Those feelings should not however cloud our judgement. Sometimes people can, if they are not paying attention, allow their feelings for one person to cloud their thinking and control their actions. Wanting to feel accepted people sometimes validate their friends opinions and actions and defend them. Let's put this in a visual.

One friend says, "I like Frank Click." Friend two says "Yeah, me too."
Friend-one, "I think Frank Click would be good at our work." Friend-two, "You are right he is a good worker."

Friend-one "Joe Schmoe is no good, Frank Click would be better at Joe Schmoe's job." Friend-two, "You are right about that."

Friend-one "You know, if you and I go to the boss and tell him how bad Joe Schmoe is he will fire Joe and then Frank could get his job. It will be easy because I am Joe Schmoes supervisor. All you have to do is make the complaint. I'll do the rest. " Friend-two "Well, I don't know anything bad I could say about Joe Schmoe to the boss."

Friend-one "Oh, I know all kinds of bad things about Joe Schmoe. I'll tell you all about him." Friend-two "Oh, Joe Schmoe did all that? Well he is a bad man and we should get rid of him. Frank Click is a much better person and we should help him."

Friend-one, "Right, Frank Click is a good person and our friend. He is a relative of my wife you know and he goes to our church so we should help him." Friend-two "I'm a member of the "Click" family too on my mother's side.

On the surface these two friends may be thinking that they are good people doing their friend Frank Click a favor. They may justify their mistreatment of Joe Schmoe because he is bad in their eyes. Unfortunately there are many people who are willing to help out a friend or relative by treating them favorably and yet have no regard for the man (or woman) they are destroying. In their eyes he is a sinner and needs to "get right" with God. In Christianity it teaches that we should be good to everyone and not be a respecter of persons. A person acting on his own is one thing. Their actions should be addressed in the church. Public officials who have been given power by the people, either by election or employment, are another matter. For any and all persons who are serving the public your actions should always reflect impartiality and not to use your power to put forward "friends or relatives." To give favors or favoritism. That does not mean that at times a relative or friend may be justified in needing some assistance. After all they are citizens also, but it should never be at the expense of others.

PostSubject: What is prejudicial transfer?   Sun Dec 27, 2009 7:25 am

You may have wondered about the title of this thread. In the first post I did not specifically identify prejudicial transfer. I had noticed a pattern of behavior and I was trying to define it and give it a name. After thinking about it for some time, the best definition to describe this behavior was the term prejudicial transfer.

Definition:

prejudicial transfer - The act of conveying an opinion to another person who then takes that opinion and makes it their opinion. Often the result of gossip.

In other words, one person transfers their prejudice to another person who makes it their opinion without having all the facts. People are given one side to the story and then form an opinion and that becomes the basis of their actions. In the story above, friend-two now has a prejudice against Joe Schmoe because of what he has been told. He never asked Joe Schmoe if it is true. He just believes it and tells others how bad Joe is. Then the "prejudice" is "transfered" again. Hence the term "Prejudicial Transfer."

There are many people in this area who have been victims of prejudicial transfer. Who have had to live under the shadow of gossip. What stops gossip is truth. What stops prejudicial transfer is people who hear the gossip to recognize it as such and not form a conclusive opinion until they have all the facts. If they are unable to get all the facts then they need to remember that their opinion is only an opinion without all the facts and be ready to alter their opinion should new information be made available.

This reminds me of the title of a famous book.....Pride and Prejudice. In the book one of the underlying points was the constant reference to "money and connections." My that sounds familiar, money and connections. There are many people who focus on money and are filled with pride in who they are and their "connections" and they are prejudiced against, and look down upon, outsiders. The common class.
