| The next meeting of the BSL Area Foods Group will be Monday, April 6 at 5 pm at the Countryside Public Health meeting room in downtown Ortonville. EVERYONE is invited to attend. We would like to extend a special invitation to those folks interested in the local Farmers Market -- whether you are thinking of being a seller, or just want more information. Most of the meeting will be dedicated to the upcoming Farmers Market season. PLUS - we have yummy goodies to eat at the meetings -- local yummy goodies -- so come and see what all the fuss is about! | |

| Countryside Public Health is across the street from the public bathrooms - or the Community Center. It's on the west side of main street. KDIO is located on the top floor of the building along with some other businesses. Down stairs is the Granary and Countryside. Go in the front door and walk straight ahead. They have a large meeting room to your right. nascargirl | |

| The meeting went well. Many people were present and it was a diverse group. Both vendors, customers, and city officials. The speaker, Ryan Pesch, was great. He spoke of the different ways a farmers market could be run. The group seemed to want to be self-organized. Discussion was held on setting up by-laws and how the organization would be run. They talked about how often the farmers market should meet and the option twice a week seemed the most spoken about. Options for where the farmers market to meet were Big Stone City, Clinton, and Ortonville. Big Stone City has two parks available. One park is on HWY 12 and that gives greater visibility and the other park on the lake has an appealing view and easy access. Ortonville has the lake park and the Hotel would still like to see the market there. One vendor talked about how it is difficult for farmers to transport their beef products across state lines to sell. Joanne mentioned that what might work is to have one farmers market in Big Stone City which would accomidate the SD farmers and another one in Clinton. That market would accomidate the MN farmers. Having one in Clinton would also be a benefit for Graceville and residents in the northern part of the county as they would not be required to drive 20 miles everytime they wanted to go to a farmers market. It is nice to see smaller towns have something to look forward to and be excited about. The Big Stone Lake Area Chamber which covers all the towns in the area has been a supporter of the farmers market and will surely continue to do so no matter where the farmers market settles. Deb Wiik, Mayor of Big Stone City, was in attendence and spoke about Big Stone Citys interest in a farmers market. The residents of Big Stone City have been going through a new program to encourage growth and community involvement. Three separate groups meet and all three groups had stated that they wanted a farmers market in the area. Deb informed the participants that Big Stone City was ready to support the farmers market in any way that they could. This includes putting up a permanent sign that the farmers market would not have to take down every week but leave it up as advertizing. They would also restrict outside vendors from coming in on Farmers Market day. | |
