| Ortonville Budget Committee ready to make recommendations.
Although no official recommendations were made of the cutbacks facing the City of Ortonville, preliminary discussions leaned towards Pool cuts, golf course cuts and part-time employee benefits cuts.
Although the stimulus package from Washington is a little vague there were significant discussions in Washington that police and essential services would be part of the economic stimulus. This apparently part of the reason law enforcement survived the first round.
Mayor Johnson, Nick Anderson and John Cunningham seemed open to this approach. It appears that the decision of what to cut back will be hard but these three have not been on the side of city law enforcement in the past.
Tom Dorry raised the issue of the City Clerk's contract which apparently is riddled with loopholes regarding the costs of searching for a home in Ortonville. Perhaps this contract needs to be revised so as to set a time line for moving to Ortonville.
The position of the council seems somewhat inconsistent given the fact that they are reducing benefits to people working under Mr. Lang and yet continue to give him money way beyond what anybody anticipated. Perhaps Mr. Lang understanding the budget issue will retrospect about the continued use of this money.
Just some food for thought. Many golf courses have gone private to assist cities with golf courses that continuously red line. Perhaps the golf course should be placed for sale or at a minimum using Gov. Pawlenty's strategies, which is to tax the users and the benefactors of the golf course.
There are still serious questions about economic development given a priority over essential services that the city should at least examine.
On the other hand, it appears that the leaders even some that I have criticized are doing the best they can under difficult circumstances.
I do believe that further cutbacks in law enforcement may open an area that will continue to cause serious long term questions concerning possible federal grant money.
Let's face it. The best economic development for the city dollar for dollar may be to keep what we have so we are eligible for additional federal grant moneys in the future. Just another way to keep jobs and that is the new direction from Washington. | |

| I've been in that seat before. It sounds like the council is doing a good job looking at several options. I hope the end result is running the city as effecient as possible. Administrative cuts don't always make sense. Some of our current admin. staff have already opened the door to thousands of dollars that Ortonville would not have had. Its easy to critisize these people making these decisions. Remember, what you think is a priority for the city may not be what everyone thinks is. Also, council has several hours of research and information to base their decisions and the public has very little. That is why they are paid the big bucks:) | |

| I was very impressed at the meeting with the respect that some citizens portrayed as they presented their positions to the council. The council seemed to be attentive and listened to what people had to say. I was particularly moved by Mr. Dinnels speech. He has an appreciation for the council and the job they have ahead of them. We all need to remember that this isn't the end. My understanding is that they don't yet know what the final budget cut from the state will be for a few months yet so there may yet be more to do. | |
