There was an article about raw milk in the July 2010 Dakota Farmer by P.J. Griekspoor, editor of Kansas Farmer.

I believe that raw milk should be allowed to be bought and sold, but raw milk might not be the healthiest or most delicious milk to drink.

I will vouch for the deliciousness, it is the only milk i will drink.
As for the safety, all things including food carry some risk, but raw milk from a grade A organic dairy is pretty safe.
There are two books Raw Milk Revolution by David Grumpert who has a great website called thecompletepatient, and another book called The Untold Story of Milk that are well worth reading.
I do not trust much by the USDA or FDA.

BTW, I read the article you cited when it was in the Dakota Farmer, I think the author's reasoning is 'beyond stupid'. Most kids around here grew up drinking milk from the bulk tank.
I think that this attitude about raw milk is more about control than safety concerns. If safety were the issue the 2 egg places recently in the news as well as the recent bad hamburger from cargill would have been closed down.
I would not think it is a good idea to drink milk from a dairy cafo or any dairy that uses antibiotics and/or synthetic hormones. As with everything common sense must be applied.

I never heard of any farmer pasteurizing his milk for his family, but I suppose you can get a pasteurizer from Nasco or somewhere.

I drank milk out of a bulk tank when I was young and I always liked to drink store-boughten milk out of a carton better. There was no doubt about it. I didn't like bulk tank milk but I liked carton milk.
