How did the Big Stone Area Chamber of Commerce get started? scratch

The concept of creating an area instead of just one town is exactly what this area needs. Every community in this area is reporting declining populations.

We need to work together and those who continue to work alone in the end will be alone.

For those who are on this site, I would like to know how did the Big Stone Area Chamber of Commerce get started?

Ortonville had a very active Chamber of Commerce with people like Ed Froehlich and others at the helm. As Ed and the others retired the Chamber grew stagnant and the income from dues reduced. Although the lake was promoted, it was not like it was today.

Third parties watching were not allowed any input to expand the chamber because of the close knit group who were part of the leadership.

At that time some of us saw that we needed to move beyond Ortonville and expand into South Dakota. At that time there were a lot of our lake homes were being sold to people in Sioux Falls and other cities in South Dakota.

A representative from the South Dakota Tourism wanted to add Ortonville to their brochures but the Chamber was uninterested. This representative came to a group of us and asked why we would not advertise our community in South Dakota.

We made a deal with this representative to solicit a change of name and a change of direction of this organization to have a broader base of support and to be more broad-minded.

In exchange, these third parties anonymously provided the financial wherewithal to advertise in the brochure.

The Question for the Ortonville Chamber today is, Are we open-minded or an exclusive club?
