| To the Ortonville City Council from The Big Stone Lake Area Community Forums. The Ortonville City Council met on Monday the 16th and approved the City Council Meeting packet for the Big Stone Lake Area Community Forums. This approval was in spite of the fact that City Attorney Craig Ash informed City Administrator David Lang that there was a question as to whether or not it was a "local media." City Administrator Lang echoed that sentiment to the City Council and was concerned about the precident it would set if others would also follow suit. It takes a big person to accept constructive criticism and the Ortonville City Council set aside politics and recognized the Big Stone Lake Area Community Forums by approving a press meeting pack. Our grateful appreciation to all the City Council Members. | |

| This is great news. All over the U.S., major city newspapers are closing their press doors and opening their edoors -- going online. Paper isn't dead, but enews is powerful, and gaining followers. As it turns out, people seek responsible news, whatever the source, and many enews forums set high standards of accuracy and citizenship. The first things ever written about democratic governance on this land appeared in newsletters printed by patriots wanting to be heard and to participate. It's how Jefferson and Franklin started; it's how Ghandi began. Good for you, BSLAC Forum, and good for the stand-up leaders on the Ortonville City Council!!! Zorro | |

| I wish to thank the council for the press packet. The press packet enables this site to be more accurate in our reporting. I would especially like to thank the community for your continued support in obtaining this information. A few weeks ago the city attorney commented to me that there are a handful of people making most of the posts. I think that was a criticism. I pointed out that it is even worse in a newspaper where all of the articles are written by one or two people. We especially appreciate those of you who contribute to this site. Airing different views will help this area grow stronger and this openness is appreciated. I recall in the election this past year there were many personal attacks to make political statements. Most certainly in the halls and walls where the Constitution was created there were also attacks. It is part of the freedom of speech. Finally to the five or six of you who dislike this site. Is this because of a concern of the community or of a concern that both sides are now being presented? I suspect that this handful of people have controlled the press for the last few years and even edited or censored comments. You give superficial concerns for the police department and the real employees of the city. I suspect this site is threatening because you are not in control of this site and you have shouted loudly to convince others of your awkward positions. Frankly, the support of the comments of this site were enormous and overwhelming. I suspect you are in a weak minority and I think you will find you may be a victim of the big fish, small bowl syndrome. I want to thank the community for your support and thank the elected officials for your time and consideration. | |

| A problem I have with this site is that there is no clear concept to what it is. Is it a place for delivering the news, or to give opinions? There is a clear difference between websites that report the news with the ability to comment on the news and those sites that are strictly places to comment. If it is place for just giving opinions, it works well. As a place to report the news, its not very efficient. Having to dig through all of the topics to find a story can be a bit of a hassle.
From a design stand point, it is almost too much. There is too much animation that draws the eye away from what is supposed to be the important stuff. | |

| And why does the concept matter? What are you, the Web Police? And as for too much animation, maybe sunglasses would help you.. as a new user, i am navigating just fine. Kudos to a great site. | |

| It's tempting to criticize that which we don't understand or that frustrates us. A community forum is a lot of things, and can't be stuffed into a single mold. To use a newspaper analogy, though, there are a lot of sections and items in a paper, and people have learned to look for the parts they like and ignore the parts that don't interest them. Ads, car dealers, classifieds, world news, national news, local news, light stories, stand-alone photos, stock quotes, business news, horoscopes, crosswords, cartoons, ...the parts of a paper go on and on. But we get familiar with passing to what we seek and 'not seeing' what we don't. It's a forum...it will become fun and interesting as you get comfortable with it. I wish you happy participation!!! It's a great neighborhood. | |

| A press pack is the documentation that the city council gets each meeting with all the paperwork of what they are to discuss. It contains such items as the previous months meeting minutes, budgets, recommendations, committee minutes and recommendations, etc. Everything that the city council has before them when they discuss matters is in the press pack. The city has always given press packs to the newspaper and the radio and now they will be giving one to our local internet news. We are appreciative of the openness of the Ortonville City Council for this decision. | |
