The Ortonville Rox entered a key weekend of their regular season schedule facing two teams that were running neck-and-neck with them in league standings. When the dust had cleared, the locals walked away with a 6-0 win against the Rosen Express and by besting the Benson Chiefs by a score of 8-4.

Pitching and defense were key to the win against the Rosen Express on a cold, rainy Saturday night. Curt Schake threw 6 2/3 innings of perfect baseball before allowing Rosen’s first hit with two outs in the 7th inning. Rosen added another infield hit on a close play at first base and had a batter hit by a pitch to load the bases. Schake got the next Rosen batter to hit a come-backer he fielded cleanly, putting an end to the Rosen rally. Chris Fellows came in and threw two innings of perfect relief. For the night, the Rox held the Express to no runs, two hits, and committed no errors.

In the Rosen game the Rox were held scoreless for the first four innings as the Express pitcher, Ethan Scoblic, gave up only one hit. In the bottom of the fifth Zach Giese led off with a single, was sacrificed to second on a nice bunt by Pete Ross, and scored the first run of the game on a single by John Thomas.
Ortonville added another run in the seventh on a lead-off double by Giese, another sacrifice by Ross, and a run scoring single by Riley Sammon. The game was broken open in the bottom of the eighth when the Rox managed four runs on two hits and two Express errors.

“This was by far our best defensive effort so far this season. Everyone wanted Curt to get a perfect game and the level of concentration was really high. Defense and pitching can carry this team if we can play this well defensively,” stated manager Ron Thomas.

In Sunday’s game, the Rox started in the hole early by committing two errors in the top of the second to give up an unearned run. Benson added another unearned run in the top of the fifth. The Rox then scored two in the bottom of the fifth to knot the game at two each. The Chiefs plated two runs in the top of the sixth, and the Rox added one in their half of the inning to make the score 4-3 in favor of the Chiefs. The locals broke it open with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, highlighted by Jeff Watson’s two-run double. The Rox managed two more insurance runs in the eighth to give them their final margin of victory.

Joe Fuller started on the mound and went 5 2/3 strong innings. Chris Fellows came on and threw 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to get the win, and Riley Sammon closed the game throwing one scoreless inning.

Leading hitters for the Rox were John Thomas with three, Joe Fuller and Zach Giese with two, and Riley Sammon, Cory Stattelman, Chance Haugen, Chris Fellows, Curt Schake, and Jeff Watson each had one.

“It was a real good weekend for us to get the sweep,” stated Rox manager Ron Thomas. “Benson and Rosen had lost a combined three league games coming into Saturday” The Rox now have a 4-1 Teal League record.

Ortonville has a busy schedule next weekend. In a makeup game they travel to Canby to play at 1:00, then come home to play a game at 7:00 against Appleton the same night. The Rox then travel to Clinton for an afternoon game on Sunday at 2:00.

Last weekend was rather cold and rainy and the weather impacted on the attendance. A nice fan turnout on Saturday night against Appleton would be very much appreciated by the players. And we now have an excellent concession stand from which to buy snacks for the game.
