The office hours for the Big Stone County Veterans Service Office are 7:30 am – 4:00 pm Monday through Friday. My office phone number is (320) 839-6398.
A "Veteran" -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America," for an amount of "up to, and including his or her life."
A friendly reminder. I will be out of the office from 12 – 14 May and 17 – 21 May for our annual Meyer Father and Sons Fishing Trip to Ontario, Canada.
Here’s one for kids…..Adventure Up North!
Laketrails Base Camp is a wilderness youth camp located on beautiful Oak Island, Minnesota in Lake of the Woods. As part of the nine-day session, teens who come to Laketrails enjoy a 5-6 day canoe trip through the wilderness and waters of Ontario, Canada. Upon returning from the canoe adventure, a fun-filled day is spent at Base Camp before returning home on the Laketrails bus.
In a nutshell, here are the basics:
Teens of military families who have at least one parent deployed can pay just $50 to attend a nine-day session at Laketrails. Their program is centered around a wilderness canoe trip, but there are Base Camp activities as well. If there are youth who want to sign up for the middle school session, the age requirement (13-18) is waived, but they need to have completed the 6th grade. Also, transportation is provided via bus service which runs from Rogers, Minnesota with various stops along the way to Young's Bay in the Northwest Angle of Minnesota.
Right now they have openings available in Session 2 (July 6-14), Session 3--middle school (July 15-23), and Session 5 (August 4-12). They have been granted 20 camperships--a great opportunity for 20 lucky kids!
