Big Stone County Fair August 4-8, Free Entertainment Highlighted

The Big Stone County Fair is this week and the Free Entertainment stage and Beer Garden will be busy all five days with a wide variety of performances and events. As in the past, we are a Free Fair with no charge for outside gate admission or parking and every performance or event in this article is Free to attend as well.

There will be several new events on Wednesday, August 4th to kick off the fair beginning with Free Bingo at 6 PM. We have a quantity of nice prizes donated by an organization to the Fair and the winner of each game will receive one of these prizes which include a handmade quilt, antique doll, collectibles and toys. Also at 6 PM a local “Battle of the Bands” competition will take place at the Free Stage. We are looking for local bands of any musical genre to participate in this friendly competition. Contact Kristi Lillehaug at320-325-5957 for further information. At 7 PM in the Beer Garden will be a Texas Hold-Em poker tournament which is Free to enter and open to everyone regardless of Poker playing experience. There are cash prizes and Free Grandstand tickets to be won by the top three finishers and fourth place will receive two Free Grandstand tickets.

Thursday, August 5th will find the debut of Kids Karaoke at the Free Stage from 6 to 8 PM. This is open to all kids ages 17 and under and will be a fun event for all involved. The outdoor stage at the Beer Garden will be rocking beginning at 9 PM with the band “Electric Almighty” which includes Chokio native Andy Schuster.

The always popular “Melody Kings” will open the Free Stage on Friday, August 6th beginning at 2 PM. The Kids Pedal Pull returns at 5 PM for ages 4 to 11. The Big Stone County Public Libraries have sponsored four One-Act plays which will focus on stories from World War II which are sure to be both entertaining and informative. Each play will last about 15 minutes and times will be 3:30, 4:00, 6:00 and 6:30. At 7:30 on the Free Stage the “Ortonville Area Swingtime Band” will be performing the toe tapping tunes they are known for. The Beer Garden will be packed once again for “Big Stone Idol” beginning at 8 PM. Ages 18 and over only for this competition please.

Ortonville Area Health Services is bringing the “Zoo Express” to the Fair on Saturday, August 7th from 10 AM to 1 PM featuring displays and presentations of animals. The Diaper Derby at 10:30 and Coin Dig at 11:00 will be followed by the Agriculture Scavenger Hunt from 11:30 to 1:30 sponsored by Big Stone County Farm Bureau and 4-H. The University of MN-Morris Jazz Band will perform at both Noon and 4 PM on the Free stage with the MN State Fair Talent Contest being held at 2 PM also on the Free Stage. The musical group “Cassie & the Bobs – The Music of Patsy Cline” will grace the Free stage at 8 PM and will take you on a trip down memory lane with the powerful portrayal by Cassandra Wiese of Patsy Clines’ music. With a full backing band including steel guitar and fiddle, this show promises to be a musical event you will not want to miss. “The Blackwells” will take the outdoor stage by the Beer Garden at 9 PM and continue until closing time with a good selection of rock and country songs everyone will enjoy.

Tina and Lena are back by popular demand and will take over the Free stage on Sunday, August 8th with their brand of humor and music which makes them one of the most popular performers at the Fair. Their shows at 1 and 4 PM draw big crowds, so come early to grab a seat and get ready to laugh and have some fun. The Big Stone County Fair Raffle drawing will take place at 5:30 PM and tickets are still available. $2500 in cash will be given away with $1000 being the top prize. Thank you for supporting the Fair with a purchase of a raffle ticket for $20 with only 250 being sold.
