There are some of you who know what Postum is. We see it on the grocery shelf in the coffee section. It isn't coffee and it isn't chocolate. It is a hot grain drink.
It was made of wheat bran, wheat, molasses, and maltodextrin. It was originally created by company founder C.W. Post in 1895 as a coffee substitute. It was caffeine free, fat free, trans-fat free sodium free, and kosher.
For those of you in the community who have shared my love of the drink we now have a common bond.
Kraft foods discontinued Postum October 2007.
I don't drink it every day and so it had been some time since I had purchased any. I went to Hartmans Super Valu in Ortonville recently and there was non there.
Next I tried Bonnies in Clinton. Strike two.
For my final try I went to Berens and Bills Super Valu in Milbank. Strike three and four.
This caused some concern and a venture was made on the internet to discover what had happened.
A search on Wikipedia revealed the devistating news.
For those of you who may still have a jar or two on your shelf be advised that jars of Postum are selling in eBay now for $25 to $35. But then if you are like me there ain't no way you would sell that little jar of gold.If however you are thinking of selling it be sure to give me a call.
Farwell.....Postum.....I knew you well
