According to the budget that City Administrator David Lang placed on the city website the Ortonville City Golf Course has lost $126,000.00 in four years.
$22,188 in 2005
$16,580 in 2006
$49,948 in 2007

This is amazing considering that the Mayor is an accountant. How does he do his books? What business can continue to operate at a loss? Any other respectable businessman would cut his losses. There has been no proposed business plan to rectify this situation. The council keeps increasing it's loss in the next proposed budget. (recommended loss $67,680 but the adopted budget lists it as $41,28?)

I repeat no attempt has been made to my knowledge to turn the golf course into a money making business. (Oh, they paid lip service to it by suggesting that they should increase membership or fees but that was just a side comment and nothing was said about putting someone in charge to follow through.)

Perhaps the city council doesn't understand that a business needs to be profitable in order to survive. Since they have access to public money they don't have to worry about profitability. They have the city coffers at their disposal.

Does the city attorney have anything to say about this?

What about the Ortonville Independent (The officially sanctioned city newspaper.) See post dated Jan 30. They were at the budget meeting. Why didn't they report that the city is funding the golf course at a loss. The paper wrote up a cozy piece and put it on the internet with no mention of the golf course operating at a loss. I have heard of hard hitting news reporting but that appears to me to be more like a marshmallow. There was no name identifying who wrote the story and so I wonder who really wrote the Marshmallow News?

By the way, just out of curiosity, I wonder who the attorney is for the Ortonville Independent?

Are they kidding?

I have talked to a number of business people over this weekend and they are appalled the golf course has lost over $120,000.00. Others who do not golf said it "should be closed!" The general consensus was that the working class was tired of paying for the rich that use the course. Mayor perhaps you could personally pay for the deficit.

Anderson, Lang, Cunningham and Johnson spend money like they print it. They make up laws and attempt to keep the public uninformed.

I see that in an effort to offend this web site the city council made up a new category, "Official radio station". I looked all over the ordinances and could not find an ordinance that created an "Official Radio Station."

The Charter is very clear though. Creation of an official anything must be by ordinance and I could not find an ordinance. I could be wrong but I am sure someone from the city will show me if I am.

Voters and citizens. We have disclosed the corruption of the serfdom of Anderson, Lang, Cunningham and Johnson. Remember when you voted for them because they promised law enforcement and you all later learned that did not mean police department.

They were as deceptive in their campaign as they are in the decisions they will soon be making. Are they honest or just another group of corrupt politicians. Remember the next time you see these men playing golf, you are paying for half of their round of golf. The middle class should not have to supplement the rich and corrupt just because they hold a political office.

Shocked It was a surprise to see the ORTONVILLE BUDGET DETAILS at the recent Ortonville City Council meeting last Monday March 16, 2009. Mayor Blair Johnson pointed out that the Golf Course has made money. Shocked Yup, you read that correct. Mayor Blair stated that he didn't know why people were saying that the golf course lost money because this budget shows it made money. (Keep in mind that the budget which shows the loss in the first post came from the city.)

Mayor Blair said that this new budget shows it only lost a little money in 2007, (as he pointed out the course depreciation accounts balance line) but otherwise it made money in the other years. This new budget includes depreciation. I am not sure how all that works scratch Councilmen Cunningham, Berkner, and Dorry did not seem that impressed with this new document. :x Cunningham and Berkner asked Mayor Blair Johnson why he didn't depreciate the pool or the senior center also. The final total in all the columns for the golf course still shows a loss to me. Last years total shows a $30,504.00 profit. It also shows a $35,000.00 transfer from the sewer fund. How is that revenue from golfing?

What I am about to say is not a reflection of the people working the golf course. We are in a budget deficit and need some answers.

As I have indicated in the past, public ownership of the golf course may be counter-productive. It takes the real property off of the tax roles and has been a losing proposition.

The Mayor played an accounting game to make it appear as if the golf course is turning a profit by striking the depreciation claimed each year. Although I could understand this if the building and all of the equipment was brand new. The fact is that it is not brand new. This means that if you remove this line of the golf course budget the Mayor is projecting no capital improvements or replacements and now he is saying that has occurred in the last four years.

This is about disingenuous as the claim made by the Mayor that a pretend trip from Clarkfield to Ortonville was an income tax issue. It hides the truth and in government creates a distrust for government.

We need to move beyond this and create better government. I sincerely hope this group of councilmen begin to lead in this direction instead of going down the wrong path.

Mr. Mayor I believe that friends tell you when you are going off of a cliff. These are the type of friends that I have. I am not afraid of criticism and if I am wrong in this analysis show me the mistake.
