One man was hospitalized early this (Tuesday) morning after a house fire in Milbank. Milbank Fire Chief Kevin Schuelke said the fire was reported just after 4 a.m. at the Robert Crist home at 513 S. Third St. Schuelke said the fire was contained to the kitchen area of the home and was quickly knocked down by firefighters using an extinguisher.
He said the house was filled with heavy smoke and one of two residents was able to exit on his own. Firefighters entered the home to help another man who was sleeping on the second floor out of the building. Schuelke said that person was transported by ambulance to the Milbank Area Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
No other injuries were reported. Electric power to the home was disconnected as a safety precaution. Schuelke said cause of the fire, which was limited to an area above the kitchen stove, is still being investigated.
Firefighters were on the scene for about an hour and were assisted by Milbank Police and Ambulance and the Grant County Sheriff’s Department.
