A call to your insurance agent/company may prevent a family disaster. You can't stop the water from rising, the snow from melting or the rains from falling -- but you can find out exactly what kind of water damage protection you have. Are you covered for flood? For saturated ground/leaking walls? Flash flood/washout? Mudslide?
You may be in for a real shock. But one phone call and an adjustment to your policy might save the day when you need it most. And it looks like that day might be sooner rather than later.
Also -- Have your 72-hour kit ready, make plans for your pets, get your valuables to high ground, and check on your elderly or infirm neighbors. Good luck, everyone!

It is my understanding that any flood insurance had to be added to your policy at least 30 days before the event.

So, checking your policy for flood insurance at this point in the game seems fruitless. If you did not take action to purchase flood insurance, you do not have it as I do not know of any insurance policies which include flood insurance. It is always a seperate policy.

There may be start-up limitations on flood insurance, but water damage insurance is part of a regular policy. I think it's going to be a long Spring. It's a good idea for home owners to find out what's covered and what's not, and whether adjustments can be made to the policy or alterations around buildings can prevent leak damage.
