Should We Continue to Promote Farm Production by Large Corporations Empty

As some on this site continue to promote bigger is better this weeks egg salmonella poisoning demostrates better than ever why bigger can lead to national recalls and hundreds and potentially thousands of sicknesses and deaths.

In the day where there was healthy competition and numerous suppliers and distributors for eggs the consumer benefited from competition and the country benefitted that if one supplier or distributor created some typte of contamination other suppliers quickly jumped in.

I remember all so well a federal government employee of a national region for the FDIC once told me, "Don't you understand that it is easier to control one big bank then ten little banks."

Putting agriculture in the hands of few has dangerous implications from both a health hazard and from an economic hazard.

We should be advocating on behalf of our family farmers who generally are better stewards of the land.

Madville Times has a new article about the Veblen Dairy. Who will clean up the mess? Who can afford to pay to clean it up?

Please do not neglect to click on the link in the above post.
A related item is "A Hidden Handout For factory Farms" in the summer 2010 Land Stewardship Project Newsletter. You can find details at www.landstewardshipproject.org click on The Money Pit: How Minnesota Property Taxpayers are Subsidizing Factory Farms.
It is not a leap to figure out these kind of shenanigans occur in almost every state.
These places are not the dream come true our local officials, community development people and those with special interests promise us.
