Statement as of 4:11 AM MST on February 08, 2009
... Freezing rain... rain... and snow to affect the area tonight
into Tuesday...
A strong area of low pressure will move across the northern plains
tonight through Tuesday. Widespread precipitation in the form of
mainly rain will spread northeast across the area through the
night. The best possibility for freezing rain will be across
northeast South Dakota and west central Minnesota tonight.
Abundant warm and moist air heading into the region ahead of the
surface low pressure area will allow for some heavier showers to
occur. Rainfall amounts of a half inch to an inch and half could
occur across the area by Monday night.
The combination of rain... snowmelt... and frozen ground may cause
some areas of flooding. Additionally... rivers and creeks are
frozen... so water May Pond or flow over the ice. Areas along and
east of the James River Valley have the best chance of any
flooding as snow pack is highest in this area.
The rain will change over to snow from west to east on Monday
night as colder air wraps in behind the surface low pressure area.
The heaviest snow will be across north central South Dakota where
significant accumulations could occur.
