On Sunday October 19, 2008 the Mill ground its first batch of corn.
Milbank city officials and members of the Friends of the Mill gathered on October 20, 2008 to hear Ben Hasset explain the progress on the Mill. After much hard work and persistence the Mill is now operational. When the Mill was first built it was found to have a design flaw in the pitch. This setback sort of took the wind out of their sails. (pun intended.)
Ben Hasset was hired to correct the problem and he has been here for 7 months. Ben Hasset will be finishing up his work for now in another week or so. He will return in the spring with some of his crew to put the finishing touches on the project.
Milbank City Administrator Jason Kettwig explained to some of the visitors about the additional plans for the Mill which include a parking lot and the hopes of tying the history of trains to this site and perhaps someday moving a train display here. They want to build a millers shack with tools and supplies.
Hopefully they will get a office with a restroom there and make it into an inviting roadside park. They plan on having it open from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
